about 4 weeks back, i had a patient who came to the OPD disoriented, with a gash on the forehead due to fall. his wife brought him to the hospital. she gave history of him fall with loss of conciousness and an episode of seizure. when she brought him to the hospital he was in a confused state. he was restless, his gait was unsteady.first impression he appeared like a drunk guy.
it turned out that he had a stroke. causing weakness on one side of the body. luckily for him he was not paralysed. he was in a state of in and out of conciousness for 3 days. while i was taking history from his wife he still responded to simple commands. his wife was trying so hard to make sure that he was able to move his arm when i tested his power.she even helped him. i told her that we need for him to do it himself. when i asked him what colour of the bag i was showing him, his wife even whispered the answer.she was trying so hard to help her husband recovery.such a lovely couple.
after 3 days, he was able to sit up. eventually he started walking with the help of his wife.his wife was always there for him. she was such a petite lady but she could support her husband's weight.it turned out to be that the guy had a valvular heart disease which might contributed to the stroke. after a week the guy was discharged.
his wife was so talkative.if only i knew their language.i was talking in the same language but of course it's difficult for me to understand thoroughly what she was talking about.she was very cooperative and couldn't stop talking.
back to the guy, he came today for follow-up.and he looked healthy.. since i've seen him worst.his wife was also happy to see us.she continued talking to us updating about her husband's health.he was doing well now.i'm happy to see him walking and healthy.that's the joy of this profession.despite the long years of med school and long hours of working, seeing a patient recover makes your day.
my late grandfather had stroke.he was completely paralysed after that.after his stroke he could'nt recognise anyone of us.he did'nt recognise his children let alone his grandchildren. it was sad seeing him like that.
having a patient who recovered from stroke made me remember my late grandfather.i was very happy to see that patient walking again.now i know why i chose this profession.after being clueless all these years.
