paediatrics

been very busy lately..just started surgery posting one week back..

finished my paeds posting..i never thought that i would like paeds so much..children are fun to play around with..and i never thought that i would say that..heh..maybe because the profs are so nice and they teach with enthusiasm..

in paeds posting it changes the way u think..babies and small children having morbid diseases..it's sad to see them suffer when we know that the prognosis won't be good..

in obg posting..the aim is to deliver a healthy baby..but once you're in paeds..a previously healthy baby can take a turn for the worst..there was one baby who was healthy till he started having seizures when he was around 10 months..now he is solely dependent on his mother..feeding by tubes..body always in a state of contraction..how long will he have to suffer like that..

thalassemia brothers

then the thalassemia kids..there were 2 brothers both having thalassemia major..needed monthly transfusion with signs of iron overload..liver and spleen were so much enlarged..parents were poor..how can they afford the life long transfusion and chelating drugs..now there are blood tests screening couples for thalassemia carriers..it may be applicable to those educated , aware and know about this disease..but for the illiterate and unaware people..their children will suffer..its not their fault since they don't know about the condition..

then there was another pair of brothers..both having haemophilia..the younger one is now unable to walk..he had stopped school when he was in 1st std..when we asked about school..he told that he was in 4th std..true..but then he cried because the truth was that he wasn't able to go to school anymore..his knee joint is deformed due to repeated bleeding in the joint..

its sad to see these children suffer from morbid diseases..but its fun to be around children..their smile makes your day..

now back to surgery mode..as one of the prof said " treat the patient with tender, love and care..give them a pat on the back to gain their confidence in us"..

tomorrow will be a long day..3 major surgeries..even though i'm not the surgeon its tiring to stand for so long..of course the surgeon will be much more tired..
